A Full Circle of Care with FeedMore WNY’s Food Fararmacy
On the campus of D’Youville University, an amazing program is happening inside the FeedMore WNY Food Faramacy. Here, individuals and families facing food insecurity don’t just receive groceries, but they are empowered with dignity, hope and a brighter future. Volunteers and staff work together to create an experience that goes beyond food; they offer care, nutrition support, and a sense of community.
What makes this pantry so unique is that we service all zip codes and provide nutrition counseling from a registered dietitian. Our on-site registered dietitian, Katie, works closely with clients to help them make healthier food choices that fit their specific needs. Every day, she meets new people, guiding them through the pantry and offering nutrition counseling.
“We get new people every day” Katie shares. The numbers definitely speak for themselves. Since October 2023, the Food Faramacy has served 1,403 families meaning over 3,500 individuals across all zip codes. Each of these people walks into a space designed not just to meet their basic needs, but to give them the tools for a healthier future.
Unlike traditional food pantries, clients here can pick out their own groceries, selecting what best fits their household with many shelf stable and fresh options. For Marlene, a client who has been focusing on nutritious eating habits, the Food Faramacy has been life-changing.
“Everything in here is so healthy, and it really helps,” she says.
The rising cost of nutritious food had made it difficult for many to prioritize wellness, but now we have provided access to affordable, healthy options along with expert guidance to make the best choices for each person’s specific needs.
Behind the shelves of fresh produce and wholesome pantry staples are the dedicated volunteers who make this program possible. People like Trevor, who says he keeps coming back because of the joy he feels in making others feel welcome.
“It’s a feel-good environment for both volunteers and clients,” he shares.
Whether stocking shelves, bagging groceries, or simply offering a warm “good morning,” John finds fulfillment in the appreciation he receives. For Judy, volunteering runs in the family. Her siblings volunteer with FeedMore’s home delivered meal program, and she wanted to give back as well.
“I enjoy having the opportunity to help people,” she says, knowing that her time and effort contribute to something bigger than herself.
The Food Faramacy is breaking the cycle of food insecurity with education and support. To our volunteers, thank you for being part of this mission. If you are interested in volunteering and helping feed our neighbors in need click here.
