How FeedMore’s Rise Program Helped a Chef Turn a Dream into a Business
For years, cooking was more than just a skill, it was a passion for Erika. It started with potlucks, then grew into craft shows, then event catering. By 2007, that passion turned into an idea called Kafe InterNational, with letters “KIN” capitalized in the title to represent family, because to Erika, food brings us together as family.
Fate stepped in last year when a flyer for FeedMore WNY’s free RISE Culinary and Food Manufacturing program sparked a new opportunity for Erika.
“I wanted to be a part of the RISE Culinary Program to learn new cooking skills and techniques, the 1-on-1 mentorship, and to enhance skills acquired over the years.” Erika said.
Over weeks of training, food presentation, stock preparation, and crafting perfect dumplings, Erika learned new skills to help reach her goals. Every lesson inspired Erika to consider making her dream a reality. By September 30, 2024, the dream took a major step forward with four new certifications from FeedMore WNY’s RISE program. Thereafter, Erika received her LLC and Kafe InterNational catering business was official.
Erika shares that her most meaningful experience in the program was on graduation day, when a knife set was gifted to all of the graduates. This set has been an essential tool that now plays a role in every pop-up and event Kafe InterNational does. With a focus on African, Caribbean, and culturally rich cuisine, Kafe InterNational is growing, and with each beautifully plated dish, the impact of RISE is clear. “I would recommend RISE to anyone”, Erika said. “It helped me get established and inspired me to keep going.”
Because sometimes, all a dream needs is the opportunity to RISE.
